ConocoPhillips SPIRIT Scholars Toy Drive
On December 5, 2007 the ConocoPhillips SPIRIT Scholars delivered 345 toys to the patients (ages 3 months to 17 years) in St. Francis Children’s Hospital. After making the rounds and delivering toys to each of the patients, there were enough toys left to fill the “Toy Closet” where patients can go to pick a toy following difficult procedures and/or tests they must endure. Drop-off boxes were located in Business Administration Hall and in Keplinger Hall during the month of November. Thanks to all who donated and to the SPIRIT Scholars.

All the universities from Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas compete in District 10 of the American Advertising Federation. District 10 is the most competitive district in the nation, because the winner from our district goes on to win the national competition more often than any other district.
Corporate clients sponsor the competition and provide the case material with a promotional problem that every team solves in their own way. Past clients have included Toyota, Visit Florida, Yahoo!, and Bank of America. Each team must prepare a comprehensive, integrated campaign, prepare a 32-page plansbook, and then “pitch” their campaign live to a panel of judges consisting of representatives from the client firm and executives from the advertising industry. This year’s client was Coca-Cola, and the challenge was to increase consumption of Coke Classic among 13-24 year olds.
This year, 17 schools competed, making it the largest district competition in recent memory. The University of Tulsa was awarded 4th place with their “Pop Fizz Ahh!” campaign, beating out 13 other teams including the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, Southern Methodist University, Texas Tech University, and University of Houston.
The team began working on the campaign last fall, and consisted of 9 CBA (marketing) majors and 9 A&S (art, communication) majors. |
University of Tulsa MBA candidate, Haden Snyder has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship. He will spend the 2007-2008 academic year in Germany teaching English to high school students and working on a research project. Snyder plans to continue research on a cross-cultural study he began in summer of 2005 with TU business professor Mark Collins. He will be investigating cultural convergence between people living in Transylvania and Romania. After his year in Germany, Snyder plans to finish his graduate degree and eventually work in government.
The Fulbright Program, funded by Congress, provides graduates and professionals the opportunity to study or teach abroad for a year. Snyder is one of only five Fulbright Scholars selected from TU since 1997. |
