Department Highlights

New Teaching Certification Program
Graduates of this program receive a degree with a dual major - Exercise and Sports Science and Education. Click here for more information.

New Research Lab
Offers a unique opportunity for students to be a part of research into muscle and bone loss associated with space flight. This research also has application in the treatment of musculoskeletal wasting associated with diseases such as cancer and HIV

Exercise and Sports Science (EXSS) is a second degree option within the Athletic Training department. The degree program in Exercise and Sports Science includes the same basic science foundation as Athletic Training and is designed to allow the student the flexibility to target a specific area of practice. The EXSS program prepares students for both the NSCA and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) certification exams.

Students majoring in Exercise and Sports Science may use the degree as preparation for professional study in medicine, cardiac rehabilitation, physical therapy and other health care professions. Graduates often go on to work in commercial fitness centers, corporate wellness programs, personal training, and as strength and conditioning coaches.

Students wishing to work in a commercial fitness setting may benefit from including basic management and/or marketing courses in their degree plan. It is also possible for students outside of the department to complete a minor in Coaching.

All EXSS students complete two internships that give them a chance to work in the field of their choice and gain some experience before graduating. The internships allow students to explore career options before they join the workforce, so that they can more accurately choose their elective classes to prepare them for their future.
