International Business & Language
Program Information

I.    International Business is a College of Business Administration program.

This program builds on the College's business core requirements, which offers an exceptional general business foundation for students.

Non-Business majors cannot expect to complete either of the International Business (IB) programs without extending their program time beyond the expected four years.

II.   Two distinct programs are available.

A.  The International Business Minor

  • Created for Business Majors - Any business major works well with the IB minor.

Students rarely find first jobs in international business; they most often are hired into a functional area or general training area, then moved into an international business related position in a few years.

  • Requires two years of a second language, any modern language foreign to the student.  TU offers courses in French, Spanish, German, and Russian though the Language Department.

International students can meet this requirement with courses in English.
The language requirement has traditionally been the most difficult requirement.

  • Requires 21 hours of specialized coursework in international business and Arts & Science (A&S) electives.  The A&S electives may also count as blocks or general education electives

B.  The Bachelor of Science in Intl. Business & Language (BSIBL)

  • Most appropriate for students with three or four years of high school language.

  • For students with high ability in French, German, Spanish, or Russian.

  • Requires business core, IB courses, and major requirements of the language -- French, German, Spanish, or Russian.

  • The exception to the hiring rule above is that students in a second language often are hired for IB jobs and are successful

  • Program provides an excellent general business background, but little specialization in a specific business area.

  • Graduates will have fluency in a language and in-depth understanding of cultures of countries of the language.

  • Good preparation for IB entry jobs

  • Superior preparation for government foreign service jobs.

  • Excellent preparation for IB Masters or IB MBA programs.

  • New and exciting career option for those students with strong language interest.

  • Alternative to the traditional careers of high school teaching or translation

C.  Foreign Study Recommendations:

  • Both programs come with strong faculty recommendations for foreign study experiences

  • We recommend IB students go abroad during the summer after their freshman year:

The European Summer Semester is an excellent introduction to foreign business and culture taught in English.

Summer immersion programs also are available in Quebec, Canada (French) and Malaga, Spain (Spanish).

  • Semester programs taught in the student’s target language are a special feature of the IB&L.  Students reach the level of fluency required to take classes taught by host country professors in their native languages.  We have partner institutions in Germany, France, Spain, and Argentina.

  • Other semester long programs in England, Finland, Australia, and New Zealand are taught in English for interested business students including IB minors.

  • The CBA conducts a special international business class each spring that includes a 10-day foreign study trip during spring break.  This program has visited many parts of Europe and South America.  In 2002 it visited London and Paris, and Vienna and Budapest are scheduled for 2003.

  • Foreign internships are available on a limited and selective basis.

III.  Distinctions of TU International Business Programs:

  • BSIBL - No other program like it in the region.  Nationally, only two of the US New top 50 universities let their students focus on language and business at the level TU does.

  • IB Minor - No other school in our region has a program as comprehensive, with the language, business, and foreign study possibilities (remember TU foreign study is inexpensive even compared to  state schools)

  • Superior faculty in both International Business and Language.

Language teaching techniques are cutting edge with a high degree of active learning and retention.

Many TU faculty have international experience.  Some have national recognition for their teaching and research in International Business

Faculty research and cases have received significant recognition

The University had developed a significant  number of contacts in other countries, both with universities and companies.  Click here for more information.
